FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Before the film was released in June, Monsanto, the world's largest seed producer, put up a Web site dedicated to discrediting "Food Inc.," claiming we were "demonizing" farmers. We never equated Monsanto with the American farmer. But that still didn't explain why corporate representatives were never willing to go on camera. If their products were so good, why were they so afraid? What were they hiding?
Exactly.

Joel Salatin ( http://www.polyfacefarms.com/ ) gives tours of his farms and lets you see EVERYTHING! Big Agra wants you to know and see nothing.

"Polyface Guiding Principles

TRANSPARENCY: Anyone is welcome to visit the farm anytime. No trade secrets, no locked doors, every corner is camera-accessible.

GRASS-BASED: Pastured livestock and poultry, moved frequently to new "salad bars," offer landscape healing and nutritional superiority.

INDIVIDUALITY: Plants and animals should be provided a habitat that allows them to express their physiological distinctiveness. Respecting and honoring the pigness of the pig is a foundation for societal health.

COMMUNITY: We do not ship food. We should all seek food closer to home, in our foodshed, our own bioregion. This means enjoying seasonality and reacquainting ourselves with our home kitchens.

NATURE'S TEMPLATE: Mimicking natural patterns on a commercial domestic scale insures moral and ethical boundaries to human cleverness. Cows are herbivores, not omnivores; that is why we've never fed them dead cows like the United States Department of Agriculture encouraged (the alleged cause of mad cows).

EARTHWORMS: We're really in the earthworm enhancement business. Stimulating soil biota is our first priority. Soil health creates healthy food. "

I've been reading about how composting ANYTHING improves the soil biota, which is exhausted in the soil when we grow food/flowers (weeds--ducks4you is a master weed grower!! ). Anybody got any good links on this! :caf

I don't have links but I have a pretty active worm population and I am very happy about that. I am going to get some red wigglers to add to the compost bins as SOON AS IT STOPS SNOWING ON ME!!! :barnie

I'm hoping my worms are still going... my husband has a habit of picking them out of my compost bin to go shipping!

I dig my own worms and move them to the bin... that's a lot of work for his fishing hobby!

Oh goody [/sarcasm]

"India will decide tomorrow whether to approve its first genetically modified (GM) food crop. It is a move that supporters argue will help to avert a global food crisis but which critics say is being rushed through recklessly.

The new vegetable, an aubergine or brinjal in Hindi contains a toxic gene that poisons insect pests and will boost yields while reducing dependence on pesticides, its champions say. It would also open up the worlds second most-populous nation to at least 56 other GM crops that are in the final stages of development."
