Menards had 16.6 # for $5.98 with 11% rebate. I got mesquite. When it comes to other hard woods, I use wood.

when smoking I use the charcoal for the heat other wise use apple or hickory wood for the smoke, mesquite is just a bit to strong for me.
but it's up to your preference on your smoke flavor....

I have been watching Lowes Major. Every spring Kingsford blue goes on sale, 2x20 for $9.99. I buy $100 worth and it almost gets me through the season. I had to buy another 240 pounds during the Labor day sale to get me by this past year. I am down to 80 pounds and getting worried. For smoking, I use cherry, hickory, maple and ash from the surrounding woods and apple from a friends trees. I also use mesquite that my brother sends me from Texas, but only for heavy beef, like brisket. Bay knows what I mean about Texas brisket ;) I hope the price didn't go up to 12.99 nation wide. That would cost me $130 for 400 pounds :( Oh, well, it is what it is. I have been looking for a 30 gallon drum so I can make my own charcoal. It's unbelievable how rare those 30 gallon drums are now. I do have a 275, but it won't hold a 55, so it's still on the slate to be a horizontal offset.

Marshall, if we told you, we would have to tie ya behind one of Bay's 4-legged friends and drag ya through the desert...or hang ya. Good Texas brisket is not a recipe...it's a lifestyle, a state of bliss...it's perfection...ooo, whoa...I'm getting dizzy...
