I went freezer shopping last night from a local retailer, and was told that ONLY Frigidaire is making chest and upright freezers. Everyone else will be putting their label on them, but buying from Frigidaire. They told me that the last OTHER manufacturer went into bancruptcy 1 1/2 weeks ago. NOT trying to start any rumors but, if you're in the market for one, you might want to buy it soon.

I am buying a chest freezer that is used off of Craigslist... something that is between 2-4 years old preferrably!

Did you see any with locks on them? I need one that is going to remain outside on our covered porch, and I don't want people stealing.

Boy, I don't think so--that would be tough to find with the fear that a child might climb inside and get caught, but I guess that just applies to disposal of a freezer. When I go in later this week to buy mine, I'll let you know. (I would have bought it last night, but I had to use a measuring tape so my new freezer would fit.)

I have a factory lock on my freezer. It's a fairly new replacement freezer so any newer regulations must apply to it.

It's in the garage. I once had a garage break-in and lost a toolbox full of tools. I'd hate to lose all the food that's in that freezer altho' breaking that lock would sure be a simple thing.

That sounds very probable, given the economy and all. Thanks for the heads-up.

We went all out on an upright energy-efficient freezer last year to store all our chickens, venison and stuff. Got one with a temperature alarm (cause the old, used one we had went ca-put and we almost lost everything).

Now I am looking for a used fridge to rest meat in after butchering. I hate using my house fridge for that! :sick

I am in need of a new freezer... lightening strike killed the old one back in July. I had read somewhere that there was going to be a rebate program on appliances that should start sometime around the end of November. So I decided I would wait and see how that was going to work. Here's a link:

That information is just starting to get out . . . or, I should say, this is only the 2nd time I've heard of it. Thanks Bid!

An important note on the the program is that the states will administer it. That means, from the other story I read, that it will start at various times depending on where you live. I recall that some states will start at New Years but others won't begin until March. Maybe there's a link somewhere to the various states and we could check on where we are, locally.

I'm sure that DW would like another kitchen range . . . but now I don't see that it's on the fed's list :/. I'd better get my tail down to somewhere I can find a switch for one of the burners. (There's no need to tell me that I've got to pull the plug out of the wall before I yank the switch out !!) The darn thing works, it just doesn't provide any "control" thru half the dial - it's either "full on" or, "below medium" . . . darn thing.

Well, maybe I can take advantage of it for new living room AC. I expect the old one to go out every summer. Maybe it can go in the kitchen . . . leave the burner at "full on" and run the air conditioner . . .

Okay, I found a gov website with information on the "start date" for some of the states.

EPA/EOE Energy Star

"As of December 1, 2009, DOE approved 18 State Rebate plans, only Delaware has posted details about their rebates. More information about programs starting in December (KS,OR, VI) should be available soon."

So, we can expect updates on that page I'm guessing BUT the states have responsibility to notify their residents. (Some how I think that the appliance stores will make a HUGE deal out of this .)

Only 3 state programs (and the US Virgin Islands) begin this month . . . So, unless you live in one of those 3 states (or the US Virgin Islands), don't be thinking about this as something to put under the Christmas tree. Well, maybe you could - slide some cash in an envelope (less the $50 to $250 rebate :)) and hang it in the tree.

I checked my state website by searching the term "cash for appliances", but nothing on the rebate program.
However I am certain that as soon as the program goes into effect you won't be able to turn on a radio or t.v. without hearing 1 or 2....hundred commercials ala cash for clunkers.

Okay--Bought my new freezer to be delivered on Monday. The salesman confirmed that Frigidaire is now the ONLY manufacturer of freezers, the upright and chest models. He said that the only other manufacturer went bankrupt and liquidated merchandise 2 weeks ago. ALL of the other brands of freezers can only buy from Frigidaire, now, but that's because they stopped manufacturing their own years ago. He suspects that the other will probably start producing again BUT, freezers sell fast and there's gonna be maybe 6 months of shortage. That translates to this: you may have to order and wait about a month to get one until the middle-end of 2010.
(I'm copying and pasting this to SS and BYC, too.)
