Nyboy, the roads are usually crowned (higher) in the center so melting water runs off to the sides. With a sunny day, the center of the roads should be dry rather then ice covered. That black ice usually forms here at night from moisture in the air rather then on the roadway.

Well, we closed at 9:00 on Fri. It was snowing HARD with golf ball sized flakes. It took me a little over an hour to make the 20min drive home. But made it home safe and sound! We got about 10" over Fri and Sat. Sunday was shoveling..... Advil is my best friend today - LOL.

The city has not yet hit the culdesac streets. Mine got one pass late Friday and is now over a foot deep in snow. The cross street behind my house is at least partially cleared, but I last saw a plow yesterday around lunch time.

Red that might work on roads that are flat. Here melt can run down a hill and pool on road. Everyone made it in to work, today is dead no one coming in for grooming.

Beekissed, there are benefits to city living. There are lots of stores, theaters, groceries, markets, churches, etc. often within walking distance. In times like this, we find there are also disadvantages to living in the city.

There are benefits to country living. Folks like us find those benefits far exceed the "stores, theaters, groceries, markets, churches, etc." [or anything] within walking distance" to be less important then the peace, quiet, privacy, and self-reliance of living in the country and having room between neighbors and plenty of sky above.

Neither way is right or wrong for anyone. It is just a choice.

Yes, this I know. And I expressed my choice over the matter by saying I'd never choose to live in such places. Didn't say it was wrong for others, said it was wrong for me...and I guess I'm still allowed to say such things where I live. Not sure if it is where y'all live, though.

Beekissed, you sounded a bit put off at my post. Perhaps I didn't express myself as well as I could have. I am in the country living group, hands down. In the past, Nyboy has given many of the reasons he prefers City living. These -- and the reasons of others here -- are all good reasons that I won't argue with. They are just not for me.

I just didn't want it to sound as if I was laughing at the people living in the Eastern cities who are at a greater disadvantage in this weather than we who are used to winter storms are and have county crews who are better prepared for dealing with them. Or people who have experienced bad winter weather and deal with it more as a matter of fact.

For me, however, I couldn't stand living in the city. I tried and they were 4 of the worst years of my adult life.

Bee, of course you are allowed to say anything you please about how you live and where. I wouldn't have hampered what you said when I'm saying much the same thing for myself.

Your smile at the end didn't quite cover the tone of how I heard your post. I am sorry if the way I spoke fretted you.

omg got to work this morning the front and back parking lots had 3" of ice from all the sleet they received, reminded me of going ice fishing....

if you're trying to melt or make it safer to walk on that ice just grab some bags of sand and Mortons rock salt. that is what we use up here on the ice. the sand is to help with traction and the salt helps to melt it.
