I just potted up and sat out my budding ginger roots. Usda zone 7a

I potted up my 1 lb of organic ginger and set outside. Have two pointy green stalks that have broke through the thin layer of soil covering the ginger roots. I've never grown ginger before, so I don't even know what it'll look like. And I don't know what to expect either.

I would like to try tumeric also. Perhaps next year I will.

The goal is to be able to produce my own health drink. This storebought drink really helps me, although its a bit too sweet.

---> Here <--- is where my wife purchased the ginger root I planted. You want at leaset two eyes per peice. I just broke the root apart, no knife. I layed the pecies on soil with eyes facing up. A bit of green growth helped.me identify the eyes and which way they will grow. Then I covered with about a inch of soil. Set in a sunny location and kept well watered.

I circled the eyes for you. The one on the lower left is a good example of how you would lay that peice flat so the growth grows up.

Oh wow! Thank you. I've just plunked them in soil. No wonder they didn't grow!!

Yellow ginger grows pretty fast. Once it gets about 3 or 4 inches tall, it takes off. Haven't fertlized yet.

Ginger now is now waist high. Today, I fertlized with southern ag 20-20-20 with chelated minor elements, I followed the label for a drench.

Still sprouting, I noticed a couple more poking through the soil this morning.

Growing tips for usda zone 7a... as a experiment. I found the yellow ginger is a full sun lover, the more sun the better. And yellow ginger really likes water, but it does not tolerate wet feet. So well drained soil with adequate pot drain holes is a must. On the flip side yellow ginger is absolutely not drought tolerant either, not in the least little bit. Place in full sun and water daily for best results.

Curious to see what the results are this fall.

Funny how when people come over ask me what is that? I say ginger. They scratch their head and say something along the lines of, you can't grow that here. I just point my finger and say, yet there it is growing. Some people seem to have strange preconceived notions about some things.
