Going to try tomatoes again...

I made my tomato selection for the year. I hurried and clicked send before I could change my mind, because I know I could get really bogged down if I keep reading descriptions!

They're all brand new to me varieties. Go big or go home ya know?

I chose them for cool, short season productivity. Except one which makes no sense at all but I was beguiled by the photo and the
description of "sweet, mild , fruity" flavor. What fun is it if you can't go a little crazy?

Anybody grow any of these lately?

I have not grown any of those... but the Alaskan Fancy, made me giggle! You know it is short growing season tomato, if the word "Alaskan" is in the title! I guess I am behind in my seed selections. I better start deciding! Good luck with all those, Thistle. I know you will keep us posted... Hopefully, none of those flavors are appealing to the moose in the neighborhood!

I never heard of any of them. However the "muleteam" sounds very interesting. I love the names varieties have......who names these things anyway?

I just started some Paul Robeson seeds that I got from Baker Creek a few weeks ago. Germination is disappointing thus far. Otherwise, I've no experience with any of those varieties.

Thistle..you would think that San Francisco Fog would do well here but nope. Tried it twice, didn't produce much and the taste was bland.

Nope! Never heard of any of those varieties except for SFFog and I've not tried that. Two years ago I planted 102 different varieties of 'maters. Last year I stuck to just six varieties. This year I have plans for a few different tomatoes if I can find a spot to plant them all. Just not enough room in the raised beds for tomatoes AND other veggies.

I've grown some of those!

German Gold does make nice big soft yellow tomatoes. Mine had some red on the shoulders. Keep them in lots of light and warmth, don't let them have any setbacks, they will gobble up bone meal, and these new organic bulb mixes even more. No overdosing, especially early on. They will be late producing, so have a way to cover them nice n warm toward season end.

Koralik if i recall is a small plant, like a dwarf. Don't let them get shaded by bigger plants. their tomatoes are like large cherry tomatoes. yes, they are quick!

Legend makes a supermarket sized tomato on a good well behaved plant.

A friend has grown Paul Robeson 2 years in a row. plants are normal large, and they come on somewhat late. Same deal as German Gold.
Oh! Smoky delicious beefsteak tomatoes smoky dark red. Actually seem pre salted!

Taxi I never grew, but i hear tell it is similar to lemon boy only improved. if so, expect bright dusty healthy foliage, quite early to flower and produce, and almost supermarket sized bright clear yellow tomatoes.

Your varieties all look like tomato growers supply varieties.

secret for tomatoes like these in the north: start early, warm, and bright. Get those roots going strong early and fast!

Alaskan Fancy does sound like fun, Thistle'.

I will be trying Fireworks and certainly expect the best. Recommendation came from a Palouse gardener.

I've grown Legend twice and it really made me realize that a determinate could work just fine if the timing of the harvest fits the gardener's schedule. I just hate to see an early tomato spent and dying before the end of our fairly short season ! Legend produces just fine right up until frost, or it did for me . What difference would it make if it can't continue into October? Frost would kill it anyway.

The Legend plants were just covered with fruit! Amazing production but the flavor wasn't outstanding. Good texture and very pretty, tho' . . .

Taxi has appeal but I haven't grown it. Hope to learn from you!

Thanks you guys! You know, I have the hardest time selecting new vegetables. When you read the catalog descriptions they all sound so fantastic and I get a little feverish and want more than I could ever reasonably grow. :/

Steve, it will be fun to see how we both come out with Fireworks. Glad to hear that Legend did well for you, but I'm sorry to hear the flavor wasn't so great.

So Marshall, what did you think of German Golds flavor? Paul Robeson sounded intriguing and it sounds like it should be tasty, maybe Joz and I can compare notes at the end of the season. Her season is so completely different than mine.

Mary, I should have posted this before I ordered, SF Fog sounded good in the catalog....:/

My husband is on board with some kind of greenhouse for the peppers and tomatoes this year. He's actually surprised me with just how
interested he's becoming in what I grow. Maybe one of these days I'll catch him out there pulling weeds!
