Grow Lights for seed sprouting and Growing vegetables

Dumb question probably... can you do this in an unheated garage using heat lamp/grow lamp in central Illinois with our wildly swining temps?

I think you will need to make a tented arrangement, something like a set of shelving with a plastic drop cloth cover over everything. Also a heat pad of some sort would help.

I suppose you could make it work in the garage, but what you'll be looking for is consistent warm temps if you're growing things like lettuce, etc, that like warm soil to sprout. And i'm trying to remember what kind of soil temps you're looking for...i think an average of 70-75 degrees? So you'd be keeping your garage, or your tented plant area, that temp 24 hours a day.

okay i want to start growing indoors and from what i see alot of people use grow lights. okay i cant find anywhere that tells you how many watts to use per plant so can anybody tell me and i dont want to know the wattage for weed, i think they use diff. wattage for that stuff
I use 25 & 40 watt in regular 4' flourescents and can't say that I have seen that much difference. The key is keeping them close to the plants. The pic is of a stand that I made out of 1-1/4 PVC pipe.

That would probably work Thanks!!! I may try that this year!!!!

I wanted to start some herbs downstairs. Grow lights seem to cost more than what I thought they would. I keep checking craigslist for them. I love the pics of the setups! Those help a lot.

If you are just going to start the plants off for a month or so, you can get away just fine with fluorecent strip lights and daylight or grow light tubes in the 4 foot lengths. That should cost maybe 20 for the lamp, and 25 for a pack of 10 bulbs. You don't have to get dedicated grow lamp set ups for just starting seeds.
