it is one of our favorites here, we also sometimes make it with beans and peas too with the ham, sometimes chunks of bacon, all good eats and wonderful winter food.

I hadn't either until this year.

There are a number of versions apparently, like veggie soup in the US, but is a type of pea soup.

it is otherwise called split pea soup, often with ham or other smoked meats, sometimes made with carrots, potatoes, celery, onions too and i'm sure plenty of other things too.
