My absolute FAVORITE way to end a day is to sit in the dark on the back porch. The barn cat comes for a snuggle, I can hear frogs, crickets, night birds, occasionally owls, sometimes weird screeches from down near the creek (fox?? bobcat??)..

no i'm not up on owl identification. sounds like many other owls i've heard so i'd say it's a common one. will have to give them a listen to see if i can figure it out soon if it sticks around.

once in a while i've seen them roosting in a tree during the day. they aren't too common here because of the open fields and not many nesting places for them (old trees with holes).

Not something I've heard very many times.

Brings back a story of one of my Grandfathers, who worked for the Penn State railroad his entire life. Ticket taker. He grew up with barn owls and loved them. He had a love for owls that lasted.

I'm a daytime person and birdsong has changed over my life, altho I may enjoy it now more than ever .

Taking a walk in the woods and coming across a little owl hiding in a tree or bush is a special thrill. They are unique birds.

I had a special relationship with a Great Horned family. They lived in the hay barn near one garden. I could stand in the garden and see them in the rafters. Momma Owl didn't like me walking into the barn for a look-see on what they were eating. I was curious but it also looked like it was a fight or flight decision on her part.

The youngsters were easygoing . It was surprising that they could fly while still quite small but they all hung out together and with their mother, of course.

either it did not return last night or i was sleeping like a log and didn't hear it, but perhaps logs have better ears than i?

i've always thought that our open areas of crushed limestone would be prime owl flight paths for hunting mice and sometimes i do hear them around, but not often enough.
