Or just build a greenhouse onto the south side of the home and use heat transfer from that room and vice versa to grow food during the winter and help with heating bills.

With Colorado's extreme weather and mile-high (plus) geography, I actually thought about moving there! This morning, I gave a quick tour of the greenhouse to a friend. She said, "you're not behind." No, I don't suppose so. I told her that I once thought about moving to the area near my grandfather's home in British Columbia. It was on the Fraser River (@aftermidnight will know where Hope is ). I don't think I could survive the absence of winter daylight!

I was standing in the greenhouse today, it was still cold out side, but nice inside.
But piping it in, the heat, that sounds like the ticket, like a was mentioned by a couple people on this thread.
I wonder if it's cold enough in the Netherlands to be comfortable the year round~

You have to have some solar to make a greenhouse be beneficial in the winter. Steve is more familiar with the way that works than I am, but we have so much overcast in the winter, it just doesn't seem very plausible.

Not to mention all the other issues brought up. The expense of that setup alone seems like a huge extravagance. An earth sheltered home, with a solarium seems like a thought for a little easier heating...
