How cold would it have to get to require me to cover up my onions, garlic and shallots? They are about 4-6 inches tall. I live in South Central Texas and we really dont' get a lot of cold weather but we do occassionally dip down to freezing overnight. Can they handle a few hours below freezing? If so how long can they last?

Thanks,

I don't know much about the onions and shallots, but garlic is my hobby!

It is exceedingly cold hardy, being native to Central Asia.

A big problem with the freeze/thaw cycle is that it pushes the planted cloves out of the soil. In your location, I don't think you have a thing to worry about. I live in wester Oregon which has a pretty temperate winter climate, but my elevation is 1000 feet which makes it a little colder. I still don't have any need to mulch.

Your plants should be fine. Hope you have a great harvest this summer!
