He's been talking about it for weeks now, but he finally did it. He mowed another part of the field and put in 16 more watermelon hills. With the hills we already had and the ones he put in the potato patch (after we pulled the potatoes out) we now have about 50 watermelon hills.
I hope he has plans for all of the melons we'll be getting in a few months. I think I heard him say something about selling them out of the back of his truck, with the cute children to draw in the customers.

I love watermelon....but that seems like it may be a few too many!! Hey, if he can sell them, why not? Lets just hope not too many other gardeners had the same idea! Either way, a bigger garden is never a bad thing!

We put out a dozen hills of watermelon, one of my favorite things. Brings a funny memory to service. My father loved growing melons and he loved giving them away. Mad man though the time he gave a bunch to someone and they went out and sold them. He said a few choice words and about all the work he did to give someone some and they sell them instead of eating them. I always think of him when planting, chopping, and harvesting melons.

Mama Chicken, what kind of watermelon are you planting? It seems like all the watermelon you can buy in the grocery store nowadays is the seedless variety. I have seen that those seeds are really expensive! Hybrids, I'm sure.

I'll take some of those off your hands! I think a homegrown melon tastes better than store bought. Just like tomatoes.
Can't grow a decent one up here usually, and I could live on melon in the summer.

Mama Chicken, what kind of watermelon are you planting? It seems like all the watermelon you can buy in the grocery store nowadays is the seedless variety. I have seen that those seeds are really expensive! Hybrids, I'm sure.

We have Sugar Baby, Moon and Stars, Jubilee, Charleston Grey, and one they called "Yellow Meat Watermelon" at the seed store.

There is a man that does that out of his van on weekends. Not sure where his come from, but if you don't go early chaces are good he sold out.

Love the melon. I've tried several times to grow some up here in Northern Michigan. Trying again this year. My SIL who lives about 4 hours away down state grew some really good ones last year. I kept some of her seed and am TRYING again. Good luck with all that melon...send some this way if you can't figure out what to do with all of it.
