One weather man said a swath in the carolinas would get 20 inches of rain. And a co-weatherman said to him..."I have never heard you say that before." UH-o.

I hope everyone stays safe. Hunker down. If on low ground, move to a higher location.

Chainsaws, axe and hand saws are good to have around for fallen trees.

@Nyboy we lived 3 blocks from city hall and police station at old house. It's true, they get power back on quick. Longest we were out of power was 3 1/2 weeks, usually about a week.

Going back in a grocery store after hurricane gives you the biggest feeling of gratitude. ALL frozen food, meats and fresh vegetables are thrown out. Shelves are stripped bare. Gratitude for what little there is.

Other good things to have, large roll of heavy plastic, tarps, duct tape, rope and string.

Looks like we've dodged it this time... ?
But the kitchen table is already stacked with no-cook and snacking foods. If the power is out, I am NOT trying to prepare meals. There is food to keep us from starving. It doesn't have to be gourmet.
Got all the animals' feed yesterday and would've been filling every empty trashcan, bucket and barrel tonight for watering them.

Couple of things to add to the list:
CASH! If the power is out, cards are often useless.
Extra TP and paper towels are a must. No power = no laundry and no washing dish towels/hand towels
(of course - after a long outage, I'd have to start washing in stored water or finding a working laundromat - or a neighbor with power)

Also - did you know that in an older toilet (not the low-flow ones) you can sit one of the 5gal water bottles upside down in the tank and it will provide 3 or 4 flushes?

Looks like we are getting rain ( badly needed) and some wind. last night the roads where packed, I think people where out getting supplies. One thing I learned from Sandy is gas, I filled up car and 5 gallon can. During Sandy people where waiting in line for gas for hours. most of the gas station here have generators but so do most of the people here. Home generators where using more gas then the cars.

After one hurricane, I resorted to cooking in the backyard. Had no BBQ pit, dug a hole in ground, took rack out of oven and cooked on that. COFFEE!!! Must have COFFEE!! didn't have a camp coffee pot, so boiled it in big pot. To settle the grounds, toss in ice cubes or egg shells.

Lumber and nails/screws for holding down a tarp. If you have roof damage, cover with that heavy plastic and tarp. 1"x4" are for nailing down to hold tarp down. Nail lumber vertically, not horizontally.

I have been through several hurricanes....living down in Biloxi/Gulfport/Charleston, SC/ Guantanamo Bay Cuba....from 1978-93'. Water is probably the most important, food second. Batteries, propane for cooking, if necessary, keep important docs and cash in a portable lock box. Keep gas tanks and prescriptions filled, as well as the bath tubs.
Make sure any pets have food and water, and hopefully a place to seek shelter in that doesn't flood. Most human shelters won't accept pets.

Maps. In case evacuation is ordered. Now days, cell phone chargers. A note left on your kitchen table or fridge, name and a phone number of how to contact you if needed. I bet this info could also be written on a fridge door with a lipstick or mirror if necessary.

Feminine supplies. Medical supplies. The lists can be endless! When we lived down South.....I just kept things ready/handy in case of evacuation, as we saw plenty of hurricanes in those years.

Joaquin; looks like landfall here...not likely. We are merely having a spitting mist so far. 1/10" rain in the rain guage.

We are getting a lot of rain from it today. It's so cold and blustery, feels like late November. Yuck. So not looking forward to November.

well so far out of this storm we have received a whooping 1/2" of rain.. now the wind has been another story have leaves everywhere on the ground.
been 55* all day got home turned the heat on just to take the chill off...

I love a cold house. last weekend friends stayed over so we could leave early for orchard. I opened all the windows, in middle of night got up to use bathroom, was surprised heat was on. Rather then close windows someone turned heat on.
