I have purchased my first Rose...

...and I know how broke I am, but when I saw they were hidden on a shelf yet to be unwrapped in Home Depots garden department I had to look through. There were Tea cups varieties (which I knew to stay away from) a couple of cute heirloom varities (small but fragrant) so I was going to get one of those when I saw a climber! I've been dying for a climber for my fence and arbor at the end of the drive. Something that smells great when people come over and enter my garden area and deck space.

Now, want to talk lucky... I would have just said, "I am too broke and already put my rose dreams on hold" but hubby was there and asked how much they were. $4.98! He grabbed it and said if those are the roses I want for valentine's day, they are the one's he will buy me.

So now I have this gorgeous Don Juan Climber.

Only problem is, I didn't do any research on it before I just bought it! So here it is Feb, after another snow... its cold and I'm not sure when to plant this?!

Its in a bag, and says it includes BioZone and it appears it was dipped in wax? Do I remove the wax somehow? How would you rate this rose.

I've found a lot of good feedback on it so far and that it will do well in our heat. I still am unsure how to care for it!?

Very appropriate rose and name for Valentine's Day!

Is this a bare root plant? The canes get a wax covering to help prevent them from drying out. You don't have to remove it. I would think that you could probably go ahead and plant it and it might be the best idea. Me personally, I would keep it somewhere cool for another 2 or 3 weeks and try to keep it from coming out of a dormant stage. Make sure the roots don't get dried out. But not sopping wet either! March winds can be harsh and drying, so make sure it doesn't get too dry after you plant it. Of course with all the rain and snow, that is probably unlikely anyway. Good luck on your new rose!

Well, the lucky rose will be protected on the east side of the house... but its more like the south east, so it will get light until about 4pm. It has a nice wind blocker, the side of my house and deck.

My concern was the snow fall we had recently... our soil is still super wet. I'm hoping for a week long dry spell at some point so I could do it then.

Thanks for the advice about storage, its in the house now... and I don't want it to come out of dormancy, so maybe I should leave it out in our breezeway area?!

Glad you told me about the wax, I've never seen it on anything before (yes, its bareroot... but its in a moisture control package of some sort?).

That was the main reason I suggested maybe waiting a bit before planting was saturated soil. The freeze - thaw- freeze cycle and ground heaving "might" damage those roots. A few weeks should probably moderate some of the temperature extremes. I think the breezeway would be fine. Roses can take the cold and the wind, it's the ground heaving damaging the roots that hurts them IME. It is probably in peat moss, although I have no clue what BioZone is unless it is sometype of anti fungal maybe? maybe a combination of moisture control and anti fungal? Could be a synthetic product as well.

Thats sounds great vfem , i just ordered my first rose this past week called Double Delight, i cant wait for it to arrive come spring.
I see the rose you chose is a red rose that has a beauitful scent. I'm sure it would look lovely over an arbor, with everyone complimenting how beauitful your roses are.
What if you keep your rose in the fridge to keep it dormant until your ready to plant for spring.
Or is it starting to put out leaves already?

No, no leaves yet. It was outside at home depot all covered in snow and sad. But it looks like its going to be fine until I can get it in the ground.

I keep looking at pictures of the roses on sites and I'm in awe... I am satisfied with my choice for sure.

Trying to filter all the purple flowers out of my garden and sticking with just warm tones of Yellow, Orange and red. BUT I am adding many shades of green too... and maybe white!

I planted this baby the other day! All seems fine, and its still dormant. So we'll just wait and see what happens this year. I'm wondering how much growth to expect. I've never in all my life had a climber, and neither did my mother or grandmother who both had roses... so this is very new.

My FIL always bought his on sale and eventually ended up with 67 plants, not counting a few random climbers here and there around the yard. Sometimes you can get cuttings to root too. I want to start experimenting with that because I am too cheap to pay full price for them too! Some are patented and you're not supposed to...but I don't know which ones are which in my FIL's rose garden, so I am going to anyway. I gotta preserve some before my BIL kills them all. He wants to keep his dad's roses going, but he just doesn't have the dedication that they require. BTW, our Border Collie mix's name is "Rose", too. She's sweet as can be!
