Jalapa peppers

I grew a pepper labeled as Jalapa. I believe it is a variety of Jalapeno. It has produced very well, however the peppers are changing colors from green to black. They are still on the plant and are still very firm. Is this normal ?

Not having even grown jalapenos, I'm no expert, but I would think if the peppers are still firm, unwrinkled and shiny, the black coloring is natural. There are other pepper varieties that are so dark green as to look black. Good on you for your great harvest!

I've never grown that variety however I have had jalapenos go from green to black and even some that started out black when they were quite small and stayed black. Same flavor, same texture, same heat, only difference was the skin coloration. And next to them were plants that all had green peppers.

Don't let them stop you from using them.

I plan on using them but not for my hot sauce. Black isn't very appetizing.

I think they get hotter as they turn black. I have some doing that as well. I don't know the variety - but it is definitely a jalapeno. they're pretty small. I like them a lot

It's normal. If you leave them on long enough, most will probably turn red.

Welcome Timerlane, I roast my peppers till they are black and charred for my salsa. The red tomatoes keep the salsa from turning black and it is delicious. You may want to try them to see how you like them in your salsa.

there is a kind of pepper -- small size, when they mature, they will turn to black. they are really spicy.
