Just started some seeds - seed saving success!!

I started 60 tomatoe seeds in my biodome on Xmas day. but then i got really sick and my beautiful princess knocked them down when i wasnt watching her. It totally wasnt her fault but mine. But that is why i have been gone. sickness and loss sucks.

on a bright note the biodome worked great! i had good germination and i love the individualness on the seed starting method. they were growing beautiful. I planted a bunch more this weekend but wont have the variety i originally planned on :/ and no cherrys. i figure i can pick up a sweet million or two at the nursery.


but then i accidentally drilled through my hand with a power drill trying to add drainage to some wintersown containers. that hurt. so i wont be doing any major gardening for a while. :/. Which really sucks because i need to prep my beds for my spring season.

What a crummy run of luck, obsessed!! Now things have to look up, you are done with the bad stuff for a while.

Its ok Obsessed! My precious angel took down a few starters of poppies, tomatoes, peas and who knows what else last year. All she wanted to do was help... and I'm just happy she has interest in gardening. We had enough survivors to plant enough productive everything.

Funny thing is, we still planted 12 tomato starts, 3 died from blight early on, but we had WAY more then we needed anyways. Lucky us!

I had a biodome too.... enjoy! Give it another go!

Yeah. no biggie on the seedlings lost. I have totally dreaded tthe garden with the recent cold snap here in the south and my hand should heal just as the temps rise anyway.

Success! The seeds have sprouted!! I didn't think saving seeds could be too hard, but I wasn't sure. I will post a picture of my "babies" as soon as they get big enough that you could actually see them.

Awesome! Can you tell me more about your set up? they are shop light right? I really want some but I don't trust the kids or the dogs. All it would take would be a tail wag from my mastiff and bam.

I am still yet to plant my tomatoes. I did it too early last year and I promised to wait until Feb 1st! Good thing I documented that total failure on my blog, so I could recount my oops!

I'm actually wayyy early to be starting stuff, but I figure I can always plant the tomatoes deep if they get leggy. This is how I combat the winter blues.

I did that one year when I didn't know better. I had to use a post hole auger to plant the tomatoes. I lived in Saskatchewan and had clayish soil. I was laughed at until I had the best crop of tomatoes of anyone around. They rooted all down the stems so got mega nutrients, etc. They were very hard to pull out in the fall though.

I've done that before and I have humous in my yard. When you do this the tomatoes get SUPER roots that are hard to pull out once you're cleaning up the garden for the winter, but the aren't going to grow back in the Spring, so the leftover roots will feed your next crop. Helps A LOT in a drought. to the fools who laughed at you!!!!

I bought the shelf from Lowes for about $30 a couple of years ago. It has a plastic cover that I put on it when I move stuff outside (not til early April or so). I actually upgraded my lights (well, 2 of them) courtesy of a Christmas present from my DH. They were about $30 a piece (not cheap, I know), but the woman at the garden store assured me they were the best type of bulbs for starting indoor plants on a small level, along with the cheapest ones in the store. They have T-5 bulbs. I also have a bunch of strip grow lights that I've been accumulating from Lowes - those are only about $15 a piece.

People always say I'm crazy for starting so early, but I figure, why not?
