Lacto Bacillus serum - fish hydroslate

Over the 4th; i’ll be on the fish wheel for 3 days and expect to re-fill my fish hydroslate barrel with carcasses. They’ll need broken down before they’re useable and it will be next year before i need any of the stuff as i used up most of what was all ready in the barrel recently.

not unlike any other batch; i made the rice water, cept this time there’s almost a gallon. When it was ready i added 1/4 cup of a good probiotic and 3 gallons of milk. This will produce roughly 3 1/2 gallons of useable product once it’s done.

the ratio is suppose to be 10 to 1 fro rice wash to milk but over the years i’ve learned more is better as it speeds up the separation phase greatly. The added probiotic has proven valuable as well.

Anyway, inside of a week it’ll be ready to go!

@Alasgun How do you manage the visitors who smell your 'carcass restaurant'?
I imagine, like me, you get your fair share of wildlife. I know the bears are still here investigating my yard everyday, though they are more discreet now (in the very early a.m.) that I have a dog. And I don't even compost! Only vegetation goes in 'the pile'. If I were to put my toothbrush in that pile though, I'd get visitors that very day, while out in the yard at noon.

@heirloomgal , with a good bulkhead fitting in the poly drum; there is no smell, unless i use out of it. Then the whole world smells like a fish processing plant for about 3 days. I’m very conscious of and cautious of when i apply “the emulsion” out of regard for the neighbors And i only put it on once a year so it’s not that bad.
When you drive down thru Nebraska and Colorado you smell the stockyards for many miles before you actually get to them. After arriving at the inlaws once in Chadron we we’re setting in a restaurant having breakfast and even in the building it reeked! No one seemed to even notice but us tourist! This is far better than that.

As for wildlife, a loose dog or cat is all i’ve ever seen evidence of visitors. I do wonder though, we have a few bears come thru, none actually live right in my general area though.

Once i’m back from the trip i’ll post pictures of working the fish wheel; which may be of interest to some. A quick search shows the Red’s at $70 per lb and the King Salmon at $95. Per lb!
That’s getting pretty steep for a fish. It’s always amazed us how they’ll hype it in the spring each year and how easily it sells.
We feel fortunate to be “local” and able to catch our own.

My batch of lacto is done and im pleased with doing it all in a bucket rather than a bunch of jars! Probably use this method in the future.
I gave it a good shot of Molasses to “carry it over” till i dump it in the gut barrel in a week or so.

My fish wheel trip took place a couple days ago and ive added some pictures to show you how that all works.
During the 48 hour period we caught 57 fish, 7 of which were King salmon and had to be released.Over all it was a lot of work and i can see some possibilities if you lived closer to your own wheel. This would be a good reliable way to take fish each year. everyone up and down the river by us was averaging a fish an hour which is quite slow fishing.
I went, I saw and I enjoyed the experience but will now cross that off the bucket list and take the boat to Seward in a couple weeks for our fish.
At the top of the hill behind us is the Chitina airport, so several times a day a group of the tour operators were busy ferrying folks out to various locations.

I spent the day at “fish creek” today dip netting red salmon. This fishery is only open one week during the summer, IF they have reached their escapement goals. They had; and they did and i was able to bring home 19 Red salmon for my efforts. This is floating around in a canoe at the mouth of the stream where it meets the ocean holding a 5 ft. Diameter net over the side. Residents are allowed 35 fish per household per season. These will get us a long way thru the year.

it kinda turned into an Alaskan tail gate party because it was much easier to clean them in the back yard than on the beach.
all the left overs are swimming in the hydro slate barrel at this writting.
