I don't think I have ever seen a salamander in the wild around here, but in the Smoky Mountains they are still plentiful. I have a pic around somewhere of a tiny salamander about an inch long, that I held in my hand. We had a fun time seeing all the tiny sallies in a mountain stream. You are probably right as to why you don't see them around much anymore. Pollution affects us in more ways than we realize.
