Get a jar and toss in some one of the Brillo pads. The non soap ones. Fill the jar with vinegar and leave it alone.

The acid in the vinegar will cause the Brillo pad to rust. The longer you leave it the darker it will get.

Brush this solution on the handle to get a nice patina aging. I'd brush it a few times as the jar color changes to give it more shades and more of a natural wear.

I'd also use some shoe polish, maybe a little flame to darken the wood too. The vinegar will give it a grayish/tan that just can't be beat.

Coffee grounds as someone suggested will help. Get some scrap wood of the same kind as the handle and okay around with some techniques to find what you like.

Don't forget to get some chain or a small hammer and randomly hit the wood to put some dents into it. Lots of tricks to help speed up the look are available don't be afraid to get creative.

Went up to our cabin to do our annual cleaning and as we were making trips to the yard waste, I noticed 5 old barrels! Asked the guy if he was selling them and he said no but that I could have one of the 2 old broken ones. My husband found a handle at home depot and I hope it will age soon to blend in. I just LOVE the yellow color! Haven't decided what I will plant in it yet. Maybe carrots since it's not the deep kind of barrel.

... You got a wheelbarrow! Pretty color too, love it! I would like to grow lettuce in one and move it to the shade on hot sunny days.
Now you have me watching craigslist, that always worries Dh a bit, never know what I will find and haul home.

Anyone know how to age cement planters? They are in full sun so moss is out.

Layers of tempra paint???? A little mossy green, a little brown, a little gray... it will flake off in no time and probably only stay in the deep parts...

@Nyboy, wonder if the vinegar/steel wool would work? You could do a small test patch.

Cane thats just the look I want only in deep parts. Going to try vinegar/ steel wool have nothing to lose.

@Nyboy If that doesn't do it try to paint with a thinned paint. Craft store bottle of acrylic paint. Might cost $1.00 Brush it over an area then wipe off extra. You should be left with color only in the crevices. Try it on the underside 1st or a small pot 1st.
