More landscape work

You would think that after 40 years we'd have the land scaped the way we wanted it, eh? Nope! DH and I took down one arborvitae -- DH grubbed it out and we pulled it over -- and DH grubbed out another while I was working inside. Son arrived in time to help take down the second tree. They then proceeded to grub out two more of the evergreens.

There are three -- of the largest -- arborvitae left to take out. These are also the tallest and the closest to power lines. I'm planning to be sure DH has all the help he needs when these come down. Calling the power company as well. I doubt they would end up falling that way with us pulling them down away from the lines, but how could it hurt to be careful?

For DH, that was a lot of hard work. Probably made worse by the fact that he hasn't been doing much of the hard stuff lately. He's gonna be one tired cookie tonight.

Those arborvitae can get enormous too! Are you removing them because of a problem with them or did they out live their space?

If they are close to power lines, electric company should cut them for you

We had hundreds of knee high arborvitae growing here when we bought the land. They have grown a lot in the past 40 years. The ones we are removing were found as seedlings under the planted arborvitae and are not hybrids. I planted these in an area that would shield the house from the road like the others were doing. These grew loose and bushy without the tight growth we wanted so after all these years we are taking them out and (hopefully) planting the golden arborvitae as we have on the other side of the driveway. These will also be planted further from the power lines.

I am beginning to fear the tall rows (3) of arborvitae that run along the road in front of the property are nearing the end of their lives. A couple are dying out now, and they are so tall that a good storm might do them in. I know the ones at the next door neighbor's yard blew over during stormy weather at about the same age/size.
