i just ordered tomatoes and bell peppers and want to order some green beans but not sure which variety to order

i want some the kinds you get in the can that have the green seed on the inside

i looked at the tenderbush kind but they have the dark purple speckly pods in the middle

i would like kentucky wonder but there is no picture of the pods in the inside

please tell me the varietes that are like the ones you buy at the grocery store with the green pods in the bean

thanks so much

my options are tendergreen, contender, provider or kentucky wonder

That's a good question elijahboy. What kind of green beans are those in the cans at the store? You know I never thought about that before.

The varieties you have listed are all bush beans? I grow Kentucky Wonder pole beans and the beans are a white/light green when immature. But they are not like a grocery store canned green bean in shape. Still good eatin' tho'. Hope this helps a bit. :)

I grew Contender's last year and they gave me beans like the ones in the store. Once upon a time I grew the Kentucky Wonders and can't remember if they were like the store ones or not but I think they were. You just have to remember to pick them before they get too big then you have to shell them, which holds true with the Contender as well....

Another variety to consider (if you can order them online and if they will grow in your zone) are the Blue Lake. I have grown those before and I think they were most like the store-bought ones.

Might help if you could tell us what brand and what it says "on the can".

There's just so many types on the grocery shelves.

just reg green beans i went ahead and ordered the kentucky

thanks everyone

next year i may try the blue lake

Green bean varieties can be white-seeded or purple (dark)-seeded. Some seed catalogs will tell you which varieties are which -- I would suggest maybe googling "white seeded" + "green bean" to find some companies that do give you this info. It sounds like what you want is white-seeded rather than purple-seeded varieties. I do think that most commonly-available old standard varieties, like kentucky wonder and blue lake and provider and such, are white-seeded, aren't they?

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Blue Lake 274, Bush are a good example. I've grown them for several years now. They don't make much of a "bean" in the pod, but are green and tender.

I'm growing some Appalachian heirlooms this year, "greasy" type cornfield beans. They are supposed to be much more flavorful and good for canning. I chose 3 varieties (it was so hard to pick!), so I'll let you guys know how that goes. Hope to have some seed to share next year!
