I have just hung up on a client picking her dogs up today. Liz was very good friends with my business partner who dead 10 years ago. He never charged Liz for board or grooming, after his death I contuned doing same. Liz is very wealthy travels a lot. She has 2 dogs one is 13 years old. Beginning of month Liz went to India for 3 weeks. She told me I could not get in touch with her. She said if any thing happen to dogs was my call. She made it clear that they where old and did not want any "expensive" treatments done. The 1st day dogs came in I knew somethings wasn't right with older dog. After 2 days I took dog to clients Vet. Dogs has Glancoma, Vet said dog should see eye dr. I told her I could not get in touch with Liz, just make dog comfortable till Liz got home and could decide what to do. Dr wrote out prescription for pills and eye drops to CVS. I picked up meds and paid $188 for them. I have been treating eye since. This is where my anger is coming from. Dogs going home today. Liz called this morning 1st time I talked to her since drop off. I said I have bad news about Luma, I had to take her to the vet she has Glacoma. Your vet is excepting a call from you, she thinks Luna should see a eye specialist. I then said I had to lay out about $190 for medication can she please pay me in cash. Keep in mind this board alone would have cost $1,365 I gave free. She said to me thats very expensive Do you have the receipt. That when I lost it. I said you think i am going to f**k you over a couple of dollars? She told me I was being sensitive. I told her " listen carefully then slammed phone down hanging up on her. Then I ordered both her dogs shaved down. Over the years I comped about $30,000 at least . I am very angry need to calm down before this ungrateful bitch shows up. PS her dogs have never once been shaved ,why should they they got free grooming their whole lives.:barnie:barnie:barnie:barnie:barnie

#1-why would you give anyone free room/board? Your place is a business.
#2-by giving the ultra rich free, why would you expect them to pay for anything? You get the privilege of being her servant....

Sorry, this is on you. Be mad at yourself.

You've been going through the wringer for awhile now...I think these things have snowballed and made you get to the melting point.
(snowball, melting point? I'm not good at analogies)

But it wasn't too hard to see something like this coming from someone like that who now just expects that everything should be free of charge from you. I agree with Carol, draw the line now. Losing her business can only be profitable to your bottom line.
And sorry you're having such a lot of discouragement lately. :hugs

If it might help:

imagine us unsophisticated, petless people thinking about a dog optometrist ... "put your chin right here and look into the light. Now, read the top line ..."

okay, I realize that it is an veterinary ophthalmologist but that rather boggles my mind, too. I mean, the syllables ..!

Alex, she is one ungrateful $!%@&, not all, but so many rich people take advantage whenever they think they can get away with it, you've been had my lad.
If she won't pay you for your personal expenses on her behalf you need to cut her loose and chalk it up to lesson learned. By not paying you the added expenses she's just shooting herself in the foot.
I think it might be a good idea to have your clients sign an agreement where they will be responsible for added expenses if something unforeseen happens and you have to take their dogs to a vet. The old saying proves true here, the more you give, the more they take. People that take advantage are just plain scum in my books.

She came in with big box of chocolate saying she was so sorry. She just spent 22 hours traveling. Did not say a word when I brought out her hairless dogs. @thistlebloom you are so right this is building of everything . I really need to take sometime for myself
:hugsHopefully there was some cash in that box of chocolates to cover the vet expenses.

Here's one for you back in the day when the city where I live was divided into areas, where the rich lived, where the business people lived and the south end where most of the laborers lived. Guess who paid their bills promptly? Southenders paid up when handed their bills, business people paid on the 1st. of the month, the elite had to be chased, and chased, and chased. I don't think much has changed over the years as to paying up.
Where they live maybe, people with money have been buying and fixing up houses in the old cjty section, keeping the character but giving them a good sprucing up. They're downright gorgeous.

That is so sad... I mean, please don't take offense, but boarding and grooming is a "luxury" to begin with. Boarding and grooming at a place as prestigious as yours is a double luxury and people who are able to choose that for their pets SHOULD be grateful for what you are providing. They should be happy that YOU LET THEM into your clientele list.
I bet that not one of them would dream of expecting freebies if they had to take their pet to Petsmart for haircut and BubbaJoes Doggie Den for boarding.
Take a long weekend, gather up some friends for a night on the town, refuse her call the next time she wants a freebee...
