Today, on 11 December 1919, the Boll Weevil monument was erected in Enterprise, Alabama.
Wikipedia: "A 2009 study found 'that as the weevil traversed the American South [in the period 1892-1932], it seriously disrupted local economies, significantly reduced the value of land (at this time still the most important asset in the American South), and triggered substantial intraregional population movements.'"
As the plague's full impact was being realized in 1916, local investors and farmers began promoting the growing of peanuts. The monument was erected as a part of their campaign.
