Not Only Alive But Flowering

We have three redbud trees up front in a wild tangle of jungle. Not even going to worry about cleaning it all up right now. Have a wooded niche on the south end of house, plan on building a gazebo and planting dogwoods among the trees.

After writing that I don't have any dogwoods, I noticed what looks very much like a dogwood shrub setting buds in the orchard. Any chance dogwood root-stock would be used under either plum or peach trees? The tree in question died back to below the graft.

I wasn't sure about the answer to this question, but it was an interesting point so I did a little looking. Grafts seem to always be species specific, except for stone fruits and citrus which can take a graft from a different variety in their family. But other than that it would be apple to apple, dogwood to dogwood, etc.
I have noticed that dogwoods pop up in odd spots, so I'm guessing birds eat the berries and plant them around.
