I quit smoking 50 years ago and it was super easy, once i stumbled onto something that worked.
As a Machinist your hands are oily a lot which would get on the smokes making them taste bad so i went looking for a way to fix that problem.
Living in Odessa Texas at the time i went to a tobacco shop to buy a pipe SO I COULD SMOKE MORE. Or that was my thinking at the time; clench the pipe in my teeth and my hands could be really dirty and it wouldn't affect the smoking.
The first thing the proprietor ask me was;”are you here to quit smoking” to which i laughed and told him my “wanna smoke more story”.
Then we got to the good part where he pointed out how many folks came to him to quit; both men and women.
He explained that American smokes were loaded with sugar and glycerine which contributes to both the cancer AND the addiction.
Well, i listened to him but continued to buy a pipe and a couple kinds of tobacco when he finished explaining why his products helped folks quit smoking. Apparently everything in his shop was “no chemicals / organic tobacco”.
Anyway i hauled all that stuff home all proud of my new pipe and began smoking away. Then in about a week i noticed i was only smoking the thing after supper and a few times at work; this continued for about two months. Then at one point i told my wife, why dont you just throw this stuff away when i go to work today because for all practical purposes “I’ve quit smoking”!
And like i said, that was 50 years ago. And to this day cigarettes still smell bad to me and i’ve never picked one up OR wanted to.
Bear in mind the important part is the tobacco, dont just go to the grocery and buy some bag stuff because it’s go’t the same junk in it.
50 years ago we didnt have computers or i-net but with all that now days better tobacco would be easy to find, if it’s not locally available.
And lastly, it wouldn't be right for me to put all this to words without adding a big “Thank you Lord”, for pointing me in all the right directions way back then!
I’ve told this story at least 50 times over the years and always get a deer in the headlight look and to date no ones ever came back to tell me “i tried that and it worked”. What a shame.
