An article that shows that the use of organic food is directly tied to autism from her work. Both are climbing at the exact same rate. According to her, autism and Alzheimer's will increase due to glyphosate. Then why doesn't the AG community and those associated with its production have an inordinate % of diagnosed problems? She also in another article lies about spraying glyphosate on wheat and then harvesting it-illegal in USA. Too bad she can't do her homework correctly.

@bobm thanks for catch. Think valley is LadyHawke in disguise.

What Are GMOs?
GMOs are a product of genetic engineering, meaning their genetic makeup has been altered to induce a variety of “unique” traits to crops, such as making them drought-resistant or giving them “more nutrients.” GMO proponents claim that genetic engineering is “safe and beneficial,” and that it advances the agricultural industry. They also say that GMOs help ensure the global food supply and sustainability. But is there any truth to these claims? I believe not. For years, I've stated the belief that GMOs pose one of the greatest threats to life on the planet. Genetic engineering is NOT the safe and beneficial technology that it is touted to be.

Help Support GMO Labeling
The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA)—Monsanto’s Evil Twin—is pulling out all the stops to keep you in the dark about what’s in your food. For nearly two decades, Monsanto and corporate agribusiness have exercised near-dictatorial control over American agriculture. For example, Monsanto has made many claims that glyphosate in Roundup is harmless to animals and humans. However, recently the World Health Organization (WHO) had their research team test glyphosate and have labeled it a probable carcinogen.

Public opinion around the biotech industry's contamination of our food supply and destruction of our environment has reached the tipping point. We're fighting back. That's why I push for GMO labeling. I donated a significant sum to the first ballot initiative in California in 2012, which inspired others to donate to the campaign as well. We technically "lost the vote, but we are winning the war, as these labeling initiatives have raised a considerable amount of public awareness.

The insanity has gone far enough, which is why I encourage you to boycott every single product owned by members of the GMA, including natural and organic brands. More than 80 percent of our support comes from individual consumers like you, who understand that real change comes from the grassroots.

Recently, Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan) has reintroduced a bill (HR 1599) that would preempt states' rights to enact GMO labeling laws. This bill would create a federal government program to oversee guidelines for voluntary labeling of products that do not contain GMOs. It would specifically prohibit Congress or individual states from requiring mandatory labeling of GMO foods or ingredients. It would also allow food manufacturers to use the word "natural" on products that contain GMOs. TAKE ACTION NOW! Your local representatives need to hear from you! Please contact them today by CLICKING HERE.

Thankfully, we have organizations like the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) to fight back against these junk food manufacturers, pesticide producers, and corporate giants.

Together, Let's Help OCA Get The Funding They Deserve
Let’s Help OCA get the funding it deserves. I have found very few organizations who are as effective and efficient as OCA. It’s a public interest organization dedicated to promoting health justice and sustainability. A central focus of the OCA is building a healthy, equitable, and sustainable system of food production and consumption.

Please make a donation to help OCA fight for GMO labeling

Former Navy Scientist Exposes Health Hazards of Glyphosate

Former US Navy staff scientist Dr. Nancy Swanson has a Ph.D. in physics, holds five US patents and has authored more than 30 scientific papers and two books on women in science. Ten years ago, she became seriously ill, and in her journey to regain her health she turned to organic foods. Not surprisingly (for those in the know) her symptoms dramatically improved. This prompted her to start investigating genetically engineered foods.

She has meticulously collected statistics on glyphosate usage and various diseases and conditions, including autism. A more perfect match-up between the rise in glyphosate usage and incidence of autism is hard to imagine... To access her published articles and reports, please visit Sustainable Pulse,3 a European website dedicated to exposing the hazards of genetically engineered foods.

glyphosate.jpg

According to Dr. Swanson:4

“Prevalence and incidence data show correlations between diseases of the organs and the increase in Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the food supply, along with the increase in glyphosate-based herbicide applications. More and more studies have revealed carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting effects of Roundup at lower doses than those authorized for residues found in Genetically Modified Organisms.”

“The endocrine disrupting properties of glyphosate can lead to reproductive problems: infertility, miscarriage, birth defects, and sexual development. Fetuses, infants and children are especially susceptible because they are continually experiencing growth and hormonal changes. For optimal growth and development, it is crucial that their hormonal system is functioning properly.

The endocrine disrupting properties also lead to neurological disorders (learning disabilities (LD), attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), autism, dementia, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder). Those most susceptible are children and the elderly.

Roundup and Birth Defects: Is the Public Being Kept in the Dark?

Posted on:

Written By:
Earth Open Source

The pesticide industry and EU regulators knew as long ago as the 1980s-1990s that Roundup, the world's best selling herbicide, causes birth defects – but they failed to inform the public.

This report, co-authored by international scientists and researchers, reveals that industry's own studies (including one commissioned by Monsanto) showed as long ago as the 1980s that Roundup's active ingredient glyphosate causes birth defects in laboratory animals.

Questions in the EU Parliament
The following EU parliamentary questions to the European Commission (EC) have been asked about Roundup, some of them about our report:

  • Glyphosate: concern over the delayed glyphosate review, 3 Oct 2011, Question from Sir Graham Watson (ALDE), Answer from the EC
  • Cultivation of genetically-engineered seed and use of Roundup weed killer in EU Member States, 13 Sept 2011, Question from Nikolaos Chountis (GUE/NGL), Answer from the EC
  • Glyphosate: recent and worrying reports, 1 Aug 2011, Question from Linda McAvan (S&D), Answer from the EC
  • Review of glyphosate, 20 July 2011, Question from William (The Earl of) Dartmouth (EFD), Answer from the EC
  • Glyphosate: using Monsanto's research on the substance to inform decisions on its safety for use, 20 July 2011, Question from Timothy Kirkhope (ECR), Answer from the EC
  • Review of glyphosate, 12 July 2011, Question from William (The Earl of) Dartmouth (EFD), Answer from the EC
  • Suppression of information about the side effects of glyphosate in the herbicide 'Roundup', 30 June 2011, Question from Franz Obermayr (NI), Answer from the EC
  • Public kept in the dark on Roundup link with birth defects, 27 June 2011, Question from Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE), Answer from the EC
  • Roundup herbicide spray, 27 June 2011, Question from Andreas Mölzer (NI), Answer from the EC
  • Consequences for the EU of the discovery of a new pathogen in Monsanto's GMO products, 13 March 2011, Question from Kartika Tamara Liotard (GUE/NGL), Answer from the EC
  • Renewal of registration of glyphosate, 10 Feb 2011, Question from Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE), Answer from the EC
  • Error in the Commission's answer to my written question on glyphosate, 15 Dec 10, Question from Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE), Answer from the EC
  • Safety standards regarding widely used pesticide, 1 Oct 2010, Question from Michail Tremopoulos (Verts/ALE), Answer from the EC
The facts are these:

  • Industry has known from its own studies since the 1980s that glyphosate causes malformations in experimental animals at high doses
  • Industry has known since 1993 that these effects also occur at lower and mid doses
  • The German government has known since at least 1998 that glyphosate causes malformations
  • The EU Commission's expert scientific review panel knew in 1999 that glyphosate causes malformations
  • The EU Commission has known since 2002 that glyphosate causes malformations. This was the year it signed off on the current approval of glyphosate.
But this information was not made public. On the contrary, the pesticide industry and Europe's regulators have jointly misled the public with claims that glyphosate is safe. As a result, Roundup is used by home gardeners and local authorities on roadsides, in school grounds, and in other public areas, as well as in farmers' fields.

As recently as 2010, the German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, BVL, told the Commission there was "no evidence of teratogenicity" (ability to cause birth defects) for glyphosate.

BVL made this comment in its rebuttal of an independent scientific study by Argentine scientists which showed that Roundup and glyphosate cause birth defects in experimental animals at concentrations much lower than those used in agricultural spraying. The study was prompted by reports of high rates of birth defects and cancers in areas of South America growing genetically modified (GM) Roundup Ready soy, which is engineered to tolerate being sprayed liberally with glyphosate herbicide.

In its rebuttal of the Argentine study, BVL cited as proof of glyphosate's safety the industry studies submitted for the Commission's 2002 approval of glyphosate (the approval that is currently in force in Europe).

But the authors of the new report obtained the approval documents and found that contrary to BVL's claim, industry's own studies, conducted in the 1980s and 1990s, showed that glyphosate/Roundup causes birth defects in experimental animals.

Monsanto's Answer:

We are aware of the report released by Earth Open Source regarding Roundup herbicides and glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup herbicides. Monsanto health and environmental experts are reviewing the report in detail.

Based on our initial review, the Earth Open Source report does not appear to contain any new health or toxicological evidence regarding glyphosate. Regulatory authorities and independent experts around the world agree that glyphosate does not cause adverse reproductive effects in adult animals or birth defects in offspring of these adults exposed to glyphosate, even at doses far higher than relevant environmental or occupational exposures.

The authors of the report create an account of glyphosate toxicity from a selected set of scientific studies, while they ignored much of the comprehensive data establishing the safety of the product. Regulatory agencies around the world have concluded that glyphosate is not a reproductive toxin or teratogen (cause of birth defects) based on in-depth review of the comprehensive data sets available. Additionally, we have anecdotal results from first-hand experience of millions of farmers and home gardeners who have used this product for decades. Roundup agricultural herbicide provides environmental and economic benefits of conservation tillage which are sustainable and provide effective weed management.

To understand the herbicide’s active ingredient, it helps to know that glyphosate inhibits an enzyme that is essential to plant growth; this enzyme is not found in humans or other animals, contributing to the low risk to human health from the use of glyphosate according to label directions.

Earth Open Source authors take issue with the decision by the European Commission to place higher priority on reviewing other pesticide ingredients first under the new EU pesticide regulations, citing again the flawed studies as the rationale. While glyphosate and all other pesticide ingredients will be reviewed, the Commission has decided that glyphosate appropriately falls in a category that doesn’t warrant immediate attention.

Earth Open Source response to Monsanto
June 14, 2011 at 11:28am
Monsanto responded to our report [http://www.scribd.com/doc/57277946/RoundupandBirthDefectsv5], “Roundup and birth defects: Is the public being kept in the dark?” in a statement on its website [ http://www.monsantoblog.com/2011/06...june-2011-earth-open-source-report-on-roundup ].

Monsanto said, “Regulatory authorities and independent experts around the world agree that glyphosate does not cause adverse reproductive effects in adult animals or birth defects in offspring of these adults exposed to glyphosate, even at doses far higher than relevant environmental or occupational exposures.”

However, one of the main points of our report is that regulatory authorities have indeed agreed that glyphosate does not cause birth defects – but that conclusion is directly contradicted by the evidence in industry’s own studies. These industry studies, submitted by companies including Monsanto in support of glyphosate’s approval in the EU, showed that glyphosate causes birth defects in experimental animals. These effects were found not only at high doses, but also at mid and lower doses.

In addition, studies from the independent scientific literature, also detailed in our report and hitherto ignored or dismissed by the EU Commission and the EFSA, show that glyphosate and Roundup cause birth defects in experimental animals, as well as cancer, genetic damage, endocrine disruption and other serious health effects. Many of these effects are found at very low, physiologically relevant doses.

Monsanto said that Earth Open Source created “an account of glyphosate toxicity from a selected set of scientific studies, while they ignored much of the comprehensive data establishing the safety of the product”. This is false, since our data analysis included industry-funded research studies, some commissioned by Monsanto, which were submitted to the European Commission in support of glyphosate’s approval. We found that both these studies and studies by independent scientists contained clear evidence indicating that glyphosate and Roundup cause birth defects.

Monsanto said, “glyphosate inhibits an enzyme that is essential to plant growth; this enzyme is not found in humans or other animals, contributing to the low risk to human health from the use of glyphosate according to label directions.” However, numerous studies by industry and independent scientists detailed in our report show that glyphosate and Roundup are toxic to mammals and to human cells tested in vitro. Thus, Roundup must have other modes of action in addition to the enzyme inhibitory effect described by Monsanto. This is not surprising, as it can take decades to establish the precise mode of action of a toxin. Often, it remains unclear.

Monsanto called the studies that show problems with glyphosate “flawed”. But we repeat – among the studies that we review in our report are industry studies, including some commissioned by Monsanto, which show that glyphosate causes birth defects in experimental animals. It follows that Monsanto is condemning the industry studies – including its own studies – as flawed. Since the current EU approval of glyphosate is based on these industry studies, Monsanto’s apparent judgment that they are flawed gives us all the more reason to question the current approval of glyphosate.

Monsanto’s less than convincing attempt to rebut the conclusions presented in our paper raises additional questions regarding the logic supporting the approval of glyphosate as safe for use in the EU. It provides additional justification for our appeal that the European Commission appoint independent scientists to carry out an immediate, objective review of glyphosate and Roundup, considering the full range of industry and independent studies.

Parkinson's Disease: Caused by Glyphosate (Monsanto) and/or Trichloroethylene?
Posted on 4th Nov 2012 @ 3:53 PM

Several studies linked Parkinson's disease to pesticides, most notable to glyphosate (Roundup), manufactured by Monsanto. Glyphosate was first marketed in 1974. Before it was wildly used, the incidence of Parkinson's among farmers was very low. Since the 1980s, farmers and farm workers (of non-organic farms that use pesticides) are disproportionally affected with Parkinson's compared to other occupations1.

Another recent study found that, even when diluted by a factor of 99.8 percent, which is 450-fold lower concentrations than presently used in GMO agricultural applications, Roundup chemicals are still fully capable of destroying both human cells and DNA2. The deadly GMO pesticide glyphosate is the highest selling herbicide in the world and has been identified as having a wide range of minimized and/or under-reported adverse health effects. Other additives in Roundup, polyoxyethyleneamine, for instance, a surfactant that facilitates glyphosate's absorption into cells, has been found to significantly increase Roundup's synergistic toxicity in humans.

In a California study that included information on farms where pesticide use is high, the overall Parkinson's incidence rate for Hispanics was the highest among the race/ethnic groups3. Hispanics are widely employed as farm workers in California.

In a French study, the more a farmer used pesticides, the higher was the prevalence of Parkinson's disease4.

A new study with twins established a connection between the solvent trichloroethylene and Parkinson's5. Studies with identical twins are especially important since they exclude the role of genes as a variable. A twin with a work exposure of six months or greater to the solvent trichloroethylene had six times the risk of Parkinson’s disease as compared to his unexposed twin. Trichloroethylene is the most frequently reported organic contaminant in groundwater and is detectable in up to 30% of US drinking water6,7.

Could bacterial infections lead to Parkinson's?

The results of two earlier studies support the idea that the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells may be due, at least in part, to previous bacterial infections. Researchers in Chicago found that maternal infection with gram-negative bacteria's toxin (endotoxin) in pregnant rats resulted in a marked decrease in the number of cells in the substantia nigra in the rat pups that were born. Subsequent exposure to environmental toxins (!) after birth tended to speed up the loss of these cells8. In another US study, researchers concluded that an association may exist between a previous infection with a certain bacterium known as Nocardia asteroides and the development of Lewy bodies in people with neurodegenerative disorders9.

More recently it was reported that Helicobacter pylori-infected mice make less dopamine in parts of the brain that control movement, possibly indicating that dopamine-making cells are dying just as they do in Parkinson’s disease patients. Feeding mice killed H.pylori produced the same effect, suggesting that some biochemical component (toxin) of the bacterium is responsible10,11.

Dietary habits as well as the work environment and exposure to chemicals naturally play a role in the prevalence of Parkinson's. The more pesticide sprayed fruit and vegetable are consumed, the higher the chance for the development of Parkinson's.

Researchers at the University of Tokyo assessed the eating habits of 249 newly-diagnosed Parkinson's patients and compared them with 368 healthy volunteers. The results showed those in the 'Mediterranean Eating diet' group who ate the highest amounts of fruits, vegetables and fish were nearly half as likely to get Parkinson's disease as those who ate the least12.

Eat lots of antioxidant laden organic fruits and vegetables and wild fish. Never use herbicides, never use Roundup. Fight for a GMO free world.

Since trichloroethylene, glyphosate and other pesticides are eliminated with the help of glutathione in the liver, the extra glutathione in ToxDetox may explain its beneficial effects in Parkinson's. StopReabsorb (activated charcoal) is widely used to eliminate trichloroethylene and other pesticides from drinking and ground water.

Glutathione in ToxDetox and StemDetox with their natural 'antibiotic' effects, together with StopReabsorb's ability to neutralize toxins may be credited for their overall effectiveness in Parkinson's if we accept that bacterial infections and their bacterial toxins play a surprisingly neglected, yet, important role. Overall the use of ToxDetox, StemDetox, StopReabsorb (with double dose: 2000mg per day) is suggested to be taken and a high quality tap water filter to lower the load of pesticides and toxins in drinking water.

I'm glad you posted this as I almost forgot to spray down my elect fence line with my glyphosate.
Thank goodness for this stuff it sure makes my life a lot easier, I used to hate having to weed eat that entire fence line.
Oh, by the way I'll only make one post to get my point across, not 18.

THANX RICH
