Planting Bulbs

I stopped by a local market over the weekend and spied a few boxes of jonquils that had been marked down to half price. I had intended to plant some jonquils this past fall, but time got away on me. So I said "what the heck" and plopped down my two dollars for 8 bulbs. They are King Alfred, I think, one of the big yellow ones. I stuck them in the fridge for a few days. If I go ahead and plant them with some bone meal after about a week in the fridge, what do you think my chances are that they will come up and flower on time, or at least this spring? The bulbs feel firm and heavy, still. Does anybody have anything else to suggest, other than buy them earlier next time? My soil is not frozen and it is supposed to be warm for about a week.

I say go for it. Even if they don't bloom this year, you'll be ready with them already in the ground for next year! As far as blooming this year, are other bulb flower leaves up yet? If other bulbs haven't sprouted yet, you might be ok. Out in my beds the green leaves on my bulbs are up about 10 inches.

That's what I'll do, then. Baymule, I have seen a few tips of bulb greens sticking up, only an inch or less, on my house's east side.

I had a similar situation where I was given tons of leftover bulbs from the feed store that we do business. It was February and some how the ground was not frozen I popped them in the soil and they bloomed for many years. There is always the chance or a February thaw. Jonquils can be forced indoors in a bit of water for some winter color. I don't think they will be any good after the are forced however.

I had some forgotten tulip bulbs that I found in the garage in Feb. or March one year. I was able to pick a hole in the ground and plant them and they bloomed that spring. ...Must have been a mild winter....
They'll be fine So Lucky, and I bet they bloom for you this spring!

It's a bulb! If your climate is temperate enough, "Easy-peezy-mac-n-cheesy"
