planting watermelons near cucumbers

i have a quick question i hope y'all can help me with : can you plant watermelons close to cucumbers?

i had someone tell me today that if you did you could end up with watermelons that taste like cucumbers :ep

Your watermelons will not taste like cucumbers. First, they are in different families so they will not cross-pollinate at all.

Even if they did cross-pollinate, that would only affect the seeds. For example, certain kinds of squash can cross-pollinate with other specific squashes. The squash plant will still produce the type they are supposed to, but if you plant the seeds, you will get some type of hybrid.

RR is right, the other thing to consider is they can shade each other and neither will do well. If possible trellis your cukes and let them grow vertical so the watermelons can stay on the ground and grow. Made that mistake my first year and since I was able to seperate them they both did better.

i think i will be o.k. with them & shading : 1 row with cucumbers & summer squash - then i skipped over 12 feet and was planning on a row of melons - plan to skip over 12 more feet and put a row of peppers in

I ve planted cucumbers with watermelon near my fence ! they make great shades !! and they tastes great !!! plus saves my watering time too !:lol:
