Monty would be the one to ask if it was protruding or not. She seems fine, I just wish there was a way to keep her from laying eggs for a while.

There was some minor protrusion, but it looked more like two swollen hemorrhoids. As her vent was working it would close up with nothing protruding. We are going to treat her daily. If it's not clearing up in a day or two I'll post pics for the chicken experts to examine and suggest possible solutions.

Just get her to lay scrambled eggs for awhile. They are easier to pass and she won't have to strain so hard. To get scrambled eggs: squeeze hen gently, then grasp her firmly and shake. Repeat several times for best results.dewdropsinwv said:

heh, as funny as that sounds it might make the eggs inside her worse. i'd be afraid it could make her egg bound. but it really does sound like a fun way to make scrambled eggs!

Hope she will be ok. It sounds like it's pretty managable. Is it possible that it IS just simply swollen and not prolapsed? With the meds and all - maybe she's just really sensitive.dewdropsinwv said:
Don't throw the eggs away - feed them back to the birds. Mine just came off of a month of antibotics and I've been hard boiling up dozens of eggs. In the afternoon I carry 4 or 5 down and mix them in with some scratch. The chooks will ignore the seeds until every last scrap of egg is gone - and it's a great protien boost. I figure that there can't be enough meds residue in 5 eggs to effect 13 chickens.

I have a bunch of excess eggs. that's what I need to do - feed them back to the chickens. I didn't think about that.

Good news. Dew collected the eggs today and reported no blood on any of them. There were 12 eggs so we know Clover laid today. I just got done examining her and found the swelling is way down. I could still see some as her vent worked, but there was none of the slimy/bloody looking mess. I applied another small does of Prep H. It looks like she will be better by tomorrow. It's kind of disturbing how much you have to look at a chickens butt during the course of it's life :/
