Problem with lilies

I have several different kinds of lilies, all of them have lost most of their leaves after a black ball formed where the leaf attaches to the stem. I still got some blooms but you can tell the plants are stressed. Any help or ideas would be great. Thanks, Kevin

this black ball, is it more like a gooey greenish black mass? i've had a different name for it but it is not suitable for posting on here! i don't keep Asiatic lilies anymore since that used to attack them every year. i've always wondered what it was really called.

It looks like a small black ball about the size of a pea, and the plant loses al its leaves except for a few new ones at the bottom. It's really irritating. I tried spraying with an all purpose fungicide/ Insecticide , but no luck with that.

Sound like you have lily leaf beetles. The larva is what actually destroys the plant. They can consume and entire plant overnight. The gooey ball that you are seeing is actually the larva which encases themselves in the goo to protect them (it's actually there poo). Look around for a bright red beetle with black head. This is the lily leaf beetle. You should destroy any severly infected plants or pick off the Larva and kill them. Good luck!

Yep, it sounds like what attacks my lillies every year. This year I actually caught them early and sprayed. It did not get rid of them, but slowed them down enough so that the flowers bloomed. In years past they destroyed the plants before that point. If you look, I'm guessing you will see those little red beetles. Kind of look like ladybugs, but not.
