Purchasing Compressed vs Loose Soil

I always but compressed seed starting formula. Saves a lot of money when starting a lot of seed.I always use promix.
Huh. I just don't like their stuff. I find peat based soil to be too fluffy and thus sucks as good soil for larger plants, but I suppose it's perfect for just seed starting.

I imagine the local environment plays a part but here I use vermiculite as a base. The addition of clay and compost can turn it into a topsoil and really stretch my compost piles, or I can use it as a stand alone for seed. It holds moisture but has good airspace. It can get dry but seems not as hydrophobic as some like the peat.
