The nail straightening seems to be a theme to all depression era people
When I was 11 dad bought several small outbuildings from a guy, took them apart and hauled them home. Straightening nails was something my older sis and I did after school for some time. Dad used the wood for a tack room, a feed shed, a horse shelter and a large tool shed for his tools.
I definitely have the scrounging bent, but I don't know if I can blame my parents....
