I miss having cardinals in Idaho. I was born in Oklahoma and Blue Jays, I miss those things too. We have turkeys around here, but not in my yard. I have quail and lots of baby quail, a pair of mourning doves. Lots and lots of different birds in the feeder and crows.

I had a red bird hanging out in my garden. It wasn’t a cardinal, so I did a search and came up with the answer. It was a Summer Tanager. They come back every year. They patrol the garden, haven’t seen a tomato horn worm since the Summer Tanagers showed up. I have to pick tomatoes a little earlier than I like or the birds peck them. It’s worth the sacrifice of a few tomatoes for the reduction in bugs.

try putting out some shallow dishes of water for them and see if that helps to keep them from pecking at the tomatoes. sometimes the birdies do it for the moisture.
