there has to be a good nursery out your way that offers "garden soil" ....yes would add a couple bags of black kow sure there is a hippie garden store/ feed store around. get a bag of greensand to add as well. here just use a good 13-13-13 or 17-17-17

Got them filled. The top 4 inches is Kellogg garden soil. Seems like pretty good stuff. I suspect the leaves and compost under will break down and settle more. I will probably add another 6 inches or more of the Kellogg stuff later
 
only 2 beds? just wait till you get hooked ...:lol: started with 5 beds now have 11 .

the nice thing about beds you can grow pretty much year round.....

I also have a 40x40 back to Eden style garden
I'm planning on building a few more beds already. Probably two more of these 8 foot beds and one 20 foot with a trellis in front of the rabbit hutches to shade them in the summer.
 
I'm so raised bed jealous, I can hardly stand myself!!!!

How tall are the sides? We are consumed by gophers here in So. OR and there is no way I can trap or drown them all.
 
We have gophers here too. I trap what I can. We used chicken wire in the bottom of the boxes. The holes are smaller than all the gophers I have caught and I had a roll laying around.
