As I am typing this I am sitting next to the fireplace and looking at the Christmas tree. Yes, Christmas is a magical time of year but I miss getting my hands dirty in the soil and picking fresh fruits and vegetables. Yesterday, Minnesota had a huge snow storm. Where I live (in the heart of the storm) we got 16 inches of snow in less than 24 hours. I got my lifted four wheel drive truck stuck in my driveway- talk about embarrassing! Luckily my darling dad came over with kitty litter and a shovel and got me out. My poor chickens are traumatized that they no longer have the wide open spaces and green grass and bugs to munch on. For most of them, this is their first winter. But surprisingly they are laying eggs better than ever- I guess they have nothing better to do! I have been spoiling them with treats and laying fresh hay down so they feel a little more cozy. I went into my canned goods room downstairs and just about cried because all the yummy things in there reminded me of summer. I guess you could say I have the winter blues already. I suppose I will have to just stick to eating my garden salsa and browsing seed catalogs (and consider moving south) until the snowplow comes so I can go to the grocery store..or Ill just stay home

You should be okay, HPQ.

Family close by, super vehicle for the conditions, entertaining yard critters, well-stock larder . . .

Just don't do like I tend to do and . . . eat too much!

HPQ, I think all you need to feel better is a glass of wine, and some chips to go with that salsa. What could be better than getting all cozy with a snack to look at seed catalogs?

Amen to the wine! Have my glass of Moscato right here. After looking at my canned goods, I realized I had all the ingredients to make a nice big batch of Minestrone soup. I have also made my preliminary plans for the 2013 garden...it's getting easier looking out the window at all this snow. Let's hope spring comes sooner than later!

The snow stayed north of us. It has been cold for a few days but no snow yet. THe seed catalogs are not coming fast enough. But we can dream ;)

Oh Hunny, we haven't gotten hit with any snow yet. In November we had several mornings where everything was covered in ice, and I was HATING it. I stared at my garden knowing a lot was done growing at that moment, that so many things I would not be seeing again until next year.

We hit December though, and its been in the 60's no more nights below freezing, and that's back to normal for us.

January is usually a nightmare, if its going to snow at all.

Thanks to my family who all pitched in, my aunt, uncle, mom, mother-in-law.... this mid-January we're taking our daughter to Florida for 5 days of rest, and warmth! It's our first family vacation ever, so I'm excited to be away from the nasty cold that's on the way. Until then, I am refilling the propane for the fireplace and I'll be in the living room A LOT! hahaha

Lucky you Shannon for the vacation! Usually Josh and I go to Mexico every two years and January '13 was supposed to be our next trip but with us both going back to school and me switching jobs it hasn't really been in the cards this year. Hopefully next year!

As I'm typing this, it is 9 below zero outside. That's without the windchill (I don't even want to know what it is with the windchill). Our furnace and fireplace can't keep up- our house is 60 degrees right now :th . Thank God for flannel pajamas, heated mattress pads, and cuddly kitties during winter!

Wow our house is normally around 65 degrees all winter long. Initially we couldn't afford to keep it higher now we're just used to it and appreciate the savings.
