rye will be used as ground cover for the garden through the winter. if kept mowed like the rest of the yard, when could I stop mowing it so that i can get seeds from it, and it not interrupt the vegy growing season?

Typically rye is harvest after 4-5 months to allow the heads to mature. Harvest them when they are dry and a gold color.

That being said, I guess you'd have to stop mowing 5 months before you plan on starting your vegetable garden. Remember if you mow when they've started to flower this will kill the rye completely.

Good luck!
