So there I was this morning, burning daylight on the computer when I should have been loading up for work (playing with Steves "Wordles... ) when a movement out the window in front of me caught my eye. It was a young moose nosing around the flower garden behind the house.

I sprang up to find my camera which never seems to be in the right place at the right time and startled her. She trotted around the house out of sight and I, camera at last in hand followed.

She didn't come alone, mom was standing there on watch, making sure I didn't take this photo-op thing too far.
After giving me the once over she decided to take her kid over to the less annoying neighbors property, but I got a few shots in... mostly of moose behinds.

Does that maybe look like a moose, lookin' at you? Maybe a moose if you'd really not been able to find that camera?

Good Shots, Thistle'!

How cool is that??? Is that the first time you have moose on your property? I don't even want to think what they could do, in damage to the garden!

Thistle' is off-line so I'll post this: Sleepy neighborhood arborist (click)

I took serious note of that - a 2,000 pound vegetarian!

I have seen 2 moose not 2 miles from my big veggie garden! There has yet to be any deer sign in that garden but I've had them in gardens before. Moose? Never! I can only continue to hope that they will be elsewhere (& not in Thistle's garden) thru the growing season.

Coyotes are one thing . . . (racoons & marmots are somethings different ) . . . a moose could be a disaster!

Steve
who has also noted a herd of elk not more than 4 miles from the garden during winter months

I suppose they could do some serious damage if they visited during the growing season, but they don't typically show up in the neighborhood here until November. The bulls can certainly ruin a tree when they get the urge to rub their antlers on one,but so far I've only lost one youngish aspen that way. They seem to go for the slender whippy ones.

It's a mixed bag of enjoying their immense presence and anxiety over what kind of damage they may do to plants and property.
Not to mention that it's wise to look carefully when you go out, you don't want to surprise them!

They slip back up to the mountains, or more isolated areas come spring.

Steve, I have been enjoying your Wordle site :) and yes, that did look like a moose looking your way!
