Slugs have started to eat my lettuce. Now that I know what is going on
I'll put out some beer traps.

My question is do you still eat the nibbled on leaves after washing them?
Lettuce with wholes are ok I guess but what about snail slime?

Peter

I just give them a good wash and eat anyways... I sprinkle Oyster shell around where I catch the slugs rather then beer, it lasts longer, less touching of sluggy stuff, and they don't get in any nibbles before I can manage to catch them.

Another vote here for oyster shell. I forgot to use it around some of my bean plants and the 2 I missed were almost gonners. Looks like I got to them with the oyster shell just in time. There is even new growth.

I used broken eggshell because I had a lot I had saved over the winter months & it has worked very well. I don't think I would want to eat slimed leaves even after washing. I would think I could taste it......probably too vivid an imagination.........!! :hu

Maybe I'll save the beer for me and sneak some oyster shell from the chickens.;)

Thanks for the replies.

As long as you wash them off, I'm sure they are fine.

Hattie--- you wouldnt' believe what's all over all your veggies -- when you're not watching :) Go ahead and eat it all up :)

Sure, no reason not to eat slug-damaged leaves after washing.

BADLY damaged leaves can be a bit stronger-tasting, but, oh well :P

I would trim off any parts they obviously got to and then wash it up. They wouldn't want it if it wasn't good stuff- so why waste much?

I have a bag of oyster shells for the hens,so I will put that around my yard.I found it very hard to get the slug slime off my hands,so I would probably toss that lettuce in the run for my hens.
