Springtime-my favorite time of year due to a plethora of childhood memories: running through the sprinklers, smelling the flowers, and dropping corn kernels, one by one, into long rows in the back garden. What I didnt know then was that I was actually growing a habit that would provide life-long health benefits. A growing number of scientific studies have found that growing plants can result in improved physical and mental health advantages . . . that extend far beyond the obvious rewards of exercise and fresh air. Boost your overall health

Gardening is a great way to get as part of your half hour of physical activity each day. The bending associated with planting and weeding and the lifting of bags of fertilizer and soil act as aerobic activity and weight lifting. Growing plants goes further than that, however. Researchers at the University of Arkansas have discovered that women involved in yard work and other types of growing plants exercises had lower rates of osteoporosis than joggers, swimmers, and women who did aerobics. You current gardeners most likely didnt even know how healthy you were being.

Finding your happy place

Gardeners can count on better emotional and mental health also. For one, gardening is an excellent way to help relieve the stresses of day-to-day life. By evening, not only are you tired out, but you are stress free, which allows you to enjoy a better nights sleep. People who garden also experience less incidence of depression. Experts at the University of Texas and Texas A&M surveyed 298 older adults on how they would rate their "zest for life," amounts of optimism, and overall resolution and fortitude and found that gardeners had considerably higher scores in all those areas than non-gardeners.

And on top of all this, after the summer you can end up getting buckets and baskets and barrels of your own, healthy, free food. In this economy, who could say no to that?
