Squash bore worms - Ugh!

I hate these things! I dealt with them last year and have been watching for the eggs on my zucchini plants, which I found this morning. Last year we hunted down the worms, dug them out of the stems, and then buried the stems again. Is this the only way to battle these unwelcome pests or is there another way?
