As long as you keep the weeds out, onions can be crowded . . . a little. But, let's say that you are hoping for big, 3" onions by harvest time. Even wall-to-wall (and growing them as cubes ;)), you couldn't fit in more that 16 in a 144 square inches (1 square foot).

I would say that half that number (8/sqft) is a little too much altho' Purdue's Small Plot and Intensive Gardening recommends 9 "Hamburger" onions.

Purdue also says that 10 pounds per 10 feet of row can be expected. A nice big onion weighs about 3/4 pound.

these are bunching onions but gives you an idea of how close onions can be planted


Braiding? I used to braid my little girl's hair with some skill ;). I think most any onion could be braided but don't really know.
