So last year I wanted to try a bunch of new things. Many failed. Oh well, we all learn.

This year, I want to give a good amount of space to only type. This year I feel I'll get it right. In previous years, I always have at least 20 tomatoes and 1-2 squashes then a few of my favorites. I'll still have room for my tomatoes, a few grains, 2 beans, 1 cucumber, radishes, greens and the usual. (And those are types by number, I promise, I plant MANY plants of the 1 or 2.)

This year I'm bound and determined to grow melons... crazy amounts of melon! I'm in the perfect climate for it, long season and hot hot HOT! I have determined 9 varieties of melon I'm in love with from what I read, and I may yet do even more. Due to last years rains, I'm going to take care of drainage issues now to make this work.

And many more!

Do you have an obsession with giving space to just 1 species this year?

I am always obsessed. Fortunately, I have DH to tamper my obsessions. I am hoping to plant several types of melons in several areas of my property in hopes of making identification and seed collecting easier on me. I am also hoping to establish several raspberry beds. Wondering if I can get grapes started along the newly cleared south-facing hillside.

But the project I most want to get started this spring is Maverick's Wildflower Labyrinth. I have part of every other grandchild's garden in some state of progress except for his.

One of my goals for the 2014 growing season is to get a rhubarb patch established. I'm safely estimating a dozen plants. Have 3 different family members who will descend on them like locusts so Im trying to keep up with demand. Edge it, plant it, mulch & get them established so we can start harvesting in a couple of seasons.

Other than that right now it's heirloom tomatoes but that' seems to be the never ending story....

Hal, I would love to hear about your pea crosses? Do you have a thread about that project. I do so enjoy peas, but it gets too hot too fast here and some varieties died well before they produce much. I found one snap pea that I just LOVE it does amazingly well in the spring, but not in the fall. So far I haven't found a single shelling pea variety I like.

Journey, I cut back against my will last year. I actually got a lot of fishing done because of it! I even went and got my saltwater fishing license because we had more time to goto the coast. lol

Jared, I do dearly love my heirloom tomatoes. On the good side for me I'm the only one who eats and likes the tomatoes. I end up selling the rest to the farm stand for $0.50 lb. Long as I get a couple of several versions for my tastes, I will enjoy. Which reminds me, I NEED to find those spoon tomatoes again. They were AMAZING like little sweet candies to snack on. Best EVER!

Thistle, How many potato varieties do you do? I'm only doing the yukon again. It seems to be the most versatile for us.

Smart, I hope you get it done this year, it sounds like a BEAUTIFUL project!

Rabbit, last year I tried 4 melons and not a single one produced without splitting and rotting because of all the rain. This year, they're going in raised beds for better drainage. Though I did find some northern varieties with a short growing season, mini types! You should try some again. There are many I've never heard of. I think rareseeds.com has over 50 types!
