Gee, don't you give yummy stuff like that to your chickens?? (Not the chocolate). I can honestly tell you, I would never throw that chocolate out- then again there is no such thing as "old" chocolate in this house! I took a big bucket of veggie scraps out to the compost pile this morning. I dread doing it in the winter. The rest of the year, I don't give it a second thought- but today, put on hat, gloves, boots, blah, blah, blah! I hate winter!

That looks like a buffet for the wild birds, chipmunks and squirrels. You might look out on your compost pile later and see them all having a cheerio and popcorn party! :D

That looks like good stuff. Was it all stale? What was wrong with the jam? I would have taken them off your hands!

I try to avoid that kind of stuff because the first spring I went to move my compost pile out to the garden and started digging in and out ran a big rat who had been living there. All I had in there was waste from the chicken coop. I can't image what it would have been like if I had been feeding him.

Sweet potato peelings from last nights supper, some Chinese noodle soup that went sour and a couple crusts of moldy bread. Hard bread goes to my rabbits but they don't get it if it has mold. Plus of course my usual coffee grounds and egg shells.

My chickens are fat lazy things, haha. My pile needed some attention bad! I was given the 'pleasure' of cleaning out the pantry so all this stuff was stale. The cheerios were from 2008. And as for the jam....the very middle of the jars were jam but some seemed to have liquified, I guess. It didn't look or smell quite right! Yesterday, I cleaned out the coop and added the droppings to the pile

I tried to bury veggie & fruit peelings, a 5-gal bucket full, in the garden bed by the greenhouse.

We've had some warm January weather but the soil was way too frozen. A month ago, I was able to break thru about 8" of frozen ground.

I ended up getting an empty 5-gal bucket and now there are 2 buckets out there on the deck . It always works out that way this time of the year. The peelings are well-frozen, anyway.

I give all food to the chickens-I call it instant compost. When they "compost" it I put it in the composter. They eat everything except citrus.
