Nice grains Steve! ;)

They are fun to grow, and also keep the soil in the garden healthy and in good condition. I've been planting winter wheat here maybe next season I'll get to harvest some wheat, it would be so nice to make homemade flour I do love baking a lot.

I don't dare use too much oats in the kitchen. There are just over 8 ounces ;)! I'll want to plant just a tad more next time.

The yield might not be too bad from a 4 gram Fedco packet and a very short row. I can't do the comparison to half-ton/acre harvest for dry land this late in the evening . . . (Do you think that would be useful ?)

I'll try some oats in the rice cooker. That's supposed to work.

Steve :)

After weeks of hanging, it still needs a few days in a basket if I'm going to get all the seeds for next year. Someone who has grown these oats before said just cooking them as one would brown rice works fine. They can then be eaten for breakfast or any meal.
Where did you get the baskets? It looks like they have a curve to fit against your hip as you carry them.

I'm making do with laundry baskets and dollar store plastic containers, and would like to find some proper baskets. :)

Wendy, there seems to be "tons" of baskets in the thrift stores around here. That was the source for all and I really don't think any of them cost over $5 :).

We have a couple of flat baskets to lay out the veggies in after they've been rinsed in water - so they can drip for awhile. Then there are 3 flat basket that are much tighter that can be used for drying things. I've got the seed-started shallots drying in one. As well, there are some deeper baskets used for storing dry flowers. Once they have hung upside down for a few weeks, statice and such can be stored upright.

The picture seems to show a curve to the one the soybeans are in but it is just an oval basket.

It took a little while to get the "hull-less oats" to this stage. It will take another week in the sun and hammering with a 2 by 4 to get the remaining hulls off the seed. Mostly, I just picked what was still in hulls out of the mix so that I'd have something to rinse and cook for lunch.

This was just supposed to be a "side" but after I'd tasted the cooked oats, another thought came to me: Brown Rice Salad ;)!

Had a cucumber but no avocado and no can of black beans handy . . . . I decided to use green beans with my nice Thessaloniki tomato :p.

Trying to keep Seedcorn happy -- I diced some bacon. This cost me a little because I chopped the tomato on the board before I realized that I hadn't washed it . Instead of having the tomato raw, I had to toss the tomato in with the beans for the last minute of cooking. (Seedcorn should know that I also failed to support California olive growers by not using EVOO.) A little fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice and it was ready!

:) A very light lunch:

I used up about 20% of my seed to make this tiny amount. It was good but now I'd better not even think about any oats with brown sugar & cream for breakfast! I didn't think oats while eating it, I thought brown rice . . . I hope that's okay :p.
