My MIL quit cold turkey on this occasion and never smoked again. One of the most stubborn woman I have ever met. Lived to be 85 or so.

It's true!

There will still be times with the feeling of "need" or "want" and it will go on for a long time. Nicotine is ugly ...

For me, the best way to quit was to finally make the commitment to someone other than myself. I was alway, ALWAYS, willing to cut myself some slack - still am! For me, it was difficult to look into another person's eyes and lie to them.
