I cut open a tomato the other day and the seeds had started sprouting inside the tomato. It was a little strange and I was just wondering if anyone has ever had this happen before or if anyone knows what caused it.

I've seen it in canned tomatoes after they've been watered down in a recipe so that the salt doesn't keep them from germinating, but normally when we're throwing out leftovers. :sick I think I would put some of those in some seed starter and let them grow - they're trying so hard!

I had tomatoes that had "spouts" in them. Not from store bought but from my garden. I really never gave it a thought why. Sorry I could help you.

Yes, I've had them from the garden like that.

Of course, there needs to be a little closer look than what is usually necessary to fork a slice into my mouth :p.

Seemed a little strange, then I checked on what some tomato growers had to say and, apparently, it isn't uncommon.

Hi there!

I have seen it too but always in very ripe tomatoes, grown in very hot climates -- never here in the UK.

You get the same thing in citrus fruit -- I've had lemons & clementines with sprouting pips in them.

Looks like this tomato was fairly ripe and maybe had been hanging there a while. Warm, moist, acidic condition most likely stripped the gelatine capsule off a few of the seed, and voila! sprouting.

It's this gelatine capsule (that you generally ferment off the seed if you save your tomato seed) that is designed to prevent sprouting inside this super wet environ.. if something goes awry with the capsule you can get sprouting inside the fruit.
