I pull out with gloves, pile up and burn. Anything that doesn't want to get yanked out (or left to go to seed next year) gets coaxed out with a spade.

In England they use a billhook for hedge laying. They cut trees almost through and push them over so they continue to grow making a thick hedge.

Personally I use a knife for cutting stuff in the garden. For the longer grass I use a long scythe, I also got a hand sized scythe but it's new and needs to be sharpened first! This week I tried to buy a foldable garden knife in a small diy store, but they had never heard of a garden knife! I had seen it on their postorder site so I had to explain what I meant but in the end they ordered the one I wanted so I can pick it up next week.

Doesn't matter what your preferred method is, as LONG AS you clean up what you cleared. Otherwise weed seeds will sprout and you will have the same mess aGAIN in about a month.
I prefer a mower and a spade, myself.
