For 5 years now I have not been able to use the TONS of horse manure we generate around here for my garden, where it really belongs. That is because of bermuda grass seeds from the hay we feed being passed into the manure. No matter how well I composted it, the seeds still sprouted.

Well, I have at last stumbled onto a solution! Bermuda grass is of 2 basic types, the kind that sprouts from seeds (Common, Sahara, etc.) and the kind that is grown from sprigs (Calle, for example). The seeded kind is all that I have been able to find for horse hay here locally. Until today.

Today I met a farmer who grows Calle and Winston--sprig types!--exclusively. I have contracted for 2000 bales of his next crop! That means no more bermuda seeds in my manure! Maybe NOW I can finally grow a decent garden!! Well, in 2011 anyhow, since this contract won't kick in until late August/early September.

I am almost giddy with the prospect of COMPOST!
