It is a pretty large and bushy tree. I don't have a picture of the bark, but good idea to check!Could be. Leaves look right. Does the tree have thorns on it? Do you know what the flowers looked like? A close-up of the bark might help. How big is it. bush or tree?
You are correct, there are different types of Hawthorne. From what I'm familiar with I think you are right. The type I'm familiar with is beautiful in bloom, just covered with white flowers.
It looks like it was planted maybe 50 years ago by the yard.If it is a hawthorn, the long thorns will indicate the genus. There are many species, so if the tree is growing in the wild, knowing your location would be helpful. If it has been planted, identification could be tough.
