When is it too late to plant veggies?

I live in alameda CA where to me it is sunny and warm all year long. I am just getting a house now. When is it too late to plant seeds for veggies? Can I plant now and have them come up over the next few months or is it too late and they are going to die?

Well, I live in Mid-Ontario and we have first Shock-Frost usually around September 10th, and the last seeds go out in the garden on the 10th of June. Some get started indoors in March. It really depends on what you plant.

I plant beans right into the hot weather of summer. It works well enuf that I consider NOT planting them early, at all. They are a "succession" crop so there may be more and more greenbeans as the growing season goes on.

I also plant summer squash seeds late. They are another succession crop - where I can get something like early cabbage out and a zucchini in. The older zucchini plants may also suffer from mildew late in their season. It doesn't beat up the younger plants quite as bad and so the old ones can be pulled while the youngsters across the garden are just coming on strong.

Anytime that you have about 3 months of frost-free weather ahead of you, you should be able to sow sweet corn seed. Just keep things like this watered and you should make it to the "salad season" when cooler weather shows up and you can plant cool-season veggies .

I live in Arizona its not too late to plant veggies , But wait until end of july to plant fall cropslike cabbage, peas, etc. You just got to keep your garden wet.

There is a great gardening book for the bay area called "Golden Gate Gardening" by Pam Peirce. I highly recommend it. This is my bible.

Alameda County Master Gardeners puts out a planting list for west of the east bay hills. I love it! Everything in a chart that is easy to read. I can give you a copy if you wish.

You can plant alot year round here. Some of them are arugula, beets, carrots, chard, collards, kale, lettuce, mustard, green onions, cilantro, mint, oregano, sage, tarragon, and thyme. (These are from the above mentioned master gardeners list.) Cilantro does way better for me in the fall. It looks just like what you buy at the store. When I plant it in the spring, it just bolts to fast.

I'm down in the So-cal area south of you and you can grow stuff mostly year-round.. It's NOT too late to plant just about anything -- I just started 50 seedlings a bit over a week ago.. The lettuce is up and the tomato's have just started poking their heads up too.. Still waiting on others yet..

It's not too late to plant seeds BUT you have to establish them quick before the heat gets too intense.
